OBJECTIVES

After the successful 2007 International Workshop in Recife, Brazil, with 250 participants, the Second International Conference on Best Practices for Concrete Pavements seeks to focus on fundamental land-based infrastructure, such as airports, highways, railways and harbors, which are very important facilities for South American development. International experiences and contributions will be welcomed for presentations and technology exchange.

This conference will focus on innovative construction and maintenance technologies with special regards to environmental issues. Particular interest will be given to South American development and, to accomplish the goal of attracting a large Latin-American contingent, the conference will offer simultaneous translation into Spanish and English. In order to achieve the main goals, special invited keynote speakers from Europe and the USA will convey their expertise during the conference. Participants are expected to include representatives public and private road agencies, industry, academia, professional consulting and construction engineers, as well as students and any other people concerned with concrete pavements. It will offer a great opportunity for the exchange of experiences between people from several countries, including from Asia and Africa.

 

CONFERENCE TOPICS

The main topics for this conference will be: jointless concrete pavements, concrete pavement recycling techniques, precast concrete pavement and innovative technologies for concrete paving and maintenance. Special attention should be given to topics like:

  • recycling old concrete pavements and recycled concretes successful experiences in site construction
  • reinforced and continuously reinforced concrete pavements
  • thin concrete pavements (reinforced or not)
  • new paving technologies
  • pervious concrete slabs
  • special aspects and issues on sustainable concrete pavement construction and maintenance
  • surface treatments like grinding and milling, very thin cement slurry surface treatments
  • noise and skid safety issues on concrete pavements
  • design of concrete slabs for very heavy vehicles in harbor, airport and industries
  • precasted concrete pavements design and production

 

CONFERENCE FORMAT

Six special guests will be invited to speak about issues related to best practices on the main topics of this conference. These special lectures will be provided in three periods. Short courses on concrete pavement materials, construction and design will be offered by several international experts. Plenary sessions will allow representatives from many countries to discuss and debate the best practices for the aforementioned topics. Speakers in the plenary sessions will be chosen on the basis of reviews of their papers by an editorial committee with broad international representation. The conference proceedings will be published along with th 53th Brazilian Concrete Conference proceedings in electronic media, and submitted for possible inclusion in the Engineering Index.

 

PAPERS PATTERN AND PURPOSE

General condition for submission: papers can be written in English and Spanish, and must address the optimization of procedures and the needs to achieve the best design and construction results, as well as to specify ideal concrete properties, and issues for pavement maintenance. It must be understood in fact as an up-to-date and modern practice for the success of concrete pavement construction. Innovative research experiences will be accepted when their efficiency is demonstrated through actual field application. The editorial board will be rigorous about written English and Spanish that should accomplish international patterns.

  • Venue: City of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, in southern Brazil (most international flight connections are done through São Paulo International Airport; Florianópolis is a one-hour flight from São Paulo and a two-hour flight from Buenos Aires)
  • Opening: Wednesday, November 2, 9 a.m.
  • Closure: Thursday, November 4, 6 p.m.
  • Paper submission deadlines:
  • Official Language: English will be the official language of the conference. Simultaneous translation into Portuguese, Spanish Spanish and English will be provided by the organizing committee.
  • Conference registration will open in June, 2011. ALL REGISTRED PARTICIPANTS will be allowed to attend the 53th Brazilian Concrete Conference along with its international programs.
  • Official Travel Agency for the Conference will be linked to the conference website.
  • Registration policy for authors: PUBLICATION OF SUBMITTED PAPERS IS CONTINENT UPON PREREGISTRATION OF EACH ACCEPTED PAPER BY AT LEAST ONE AUTHOR.
